How to Use This D&D Character Name Generator

You can use these names in a few different ways depending on where you are in character creation.

Pick a name straight from the list. If you’re building a high elf wizard, scan the High Elf section for a name you like, then check the Wizard and Sorcerer section for a title or epithet. “Faerindal Sunveil” works as-is. “Faerindal Sunveil, the Arcanist” works even better.

Mix and match across sections. The first name from one list pairs with the surname from another. A halfling raised by dwarves might carry a dwarven clan name: “Bramwell Ironhewn” tells a story before the first session starts.

Use the class names as titles. Class-based names work as earned titles layered on top of a racial name. “Kriv Daardendrian, called Siegehart” gives your dragonborn fighter a clan identity and a battlefield reputation.

Rename the villain mid-campaign. Give your NPC one name when the party first meets them, then reveal their true name later. “Aldessa Silkwhisper” the friendly merchant becomes “Nythessa Blackveil” the necromancer when the mask drops.

Seed your tavern names early. Drop tavern and location names into session one. Players will gravitate toward the ones that sound the most interesting, and you will have given them agency without doing extra prep.

Tips for Naming Your D&D Character

A great D&D character name does four things well.

Match race naming conventions. Elven names flow with soft vowels and long syllables. Dwarven names hit hard with blunt consonants and clan references. Orcish names sound guttural and fierce. Staying within these patterns helps your character feel like they belong in the world. Use the lists above as a starting point and adjust from there.

Let backstory inform the name. A tiefling who rejected their infernal heritage might choose a virtue name like “Hope” or “Creed.” A dwarf exiled from their clan might drop the family name entirely. The name becomes a story hook your DM can pull on during play.

Keep it pronounceable at the table. “Xylthrandoriax” looks impressive on paper, but your party will call you “X” by session two. Pick something that sounds good spoken aloud, or have a built-in nickname ready. Most gnomes solve this naturally with their short-name tradition.

Have a nickname ready. Even if your full name is “Thalindra Dawnwhisper,” your party will want something quicker during combat. “Thal” or “Dawn” keeps the character’s identity intact without slowing down play.

Say it out loud before committing. Read the name aloud three times. If it feels awkward or you stumble over it, your tablemates will too. The best D&D names roll off the tongue and sound good when shouted across a battlefield or whispered in a dark dungeon.

Consider how NPCs would say it. A human innkeeper might mangle a drow name. A dwarven smith might refuse to use your gnome’s full seventeen-syllable title. These moments create natural roleplay opportunities if you plan for them.

Turn Your D&D Character Into a Novel

The best D&D characters have stories worth telling beyond the table. If your campaign has grown into something epic, Chapter’s fiction writing software helps you turn those sessions into actual novels. Build out your world, develop your characters, and write the story your party lived through — without staring at a blank page.
