Type.ai is an AI word processor for people who write books, screenplays and stories. You write in a clean editor, and an AI chat sits beside your draft to brainstorm, rewrite and give feedback. It is a good tool if you want to write the book yourself with AI help, and it has a free plan to try it on. Paid plans run from $8 to $64 a month billed annually, or $12 to $96 billed monthly.

It does not suit you if you want a finished book without writing it. Type helps you write. It does not write the whole manuscript for you.

In this Type.ai review, you’ll learn:

  • What every Type.ai plan costs, checked against its own pricing page on November 1, 2026
  • How the credit system works, and the one thing Type does not tell you about it
  • What reviewers on G2 and Reddit actually say, and how little of it there is
  • Where Type.ai genuinely beats Chapter, and where it does not

Here is what Type actually is.

What Type.ai Actually Is

Type.ai — an AI-assisted word processor for long-form creative writing, made by TypeAI Inc., a Y Combinator company that describes itself as an “AI-native storytelling studio.”

Founder Stew Fortier announced Type in February 2023 as an “AI-first document editor that helps you write faster.” Back then it pitched itself to general writers. Today the Type.ai homepage calls it “the intelligent editor for storytellers” and aims squarely at novelists and screenwriters.

The core idea has stayed the same. You keep your draft and your AI assistant in one window, so you stop copying text back and forth between Google Docs and ChatGPT.

The main features

According to Type’s homepage and pricing page, you get:

  • A real word processor: offline mode, keyboard shortcuts, version history, and rich formatting with images, tables, code and math blocks.
  • Type Chat: an AI assistant next to your document that can draft, rewrite and give editor-style feedback on what you have written.
  • Inline rewriting: select a passage, rewrite it with a shortcut, then accept or reject the change.
  • Notes: save characters, settings and scenes, and ask the chat to update them for you.
  • Custom writing rules: tell the AI how you write so its suggestions match your style.
  • Import and export: bring in DOCX and PDF files, export to DOCX or PDF, or share a view-only link. Type can also generate AI-narrated audio of your work.
  • Several AI models: the homepage promises models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google. Type’s own Novelcrafter comparison page names GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4.5.

Type says it never trains AI models on your writing. It also claims 300,000+ writers. We could not verify that number, so treat it as a vendor claim.

What Type.ai Does Well

Type.ai does four things well: it feels like a proper writing app, it removes the copy-paste loop, it lets you try everything for free, and its entry price is low. Those are real strengths, not faint praise.

It is a writing app first

Most AI writing tools feel like a chatbot with a text box bolted on. Type feels like a word processor that happens to have AI in it. Offline mode and version history matter more than they sound once you are 60,000 words into a draft.

The AI sees your draft

Because the chat lives next to your document, you can ask it about the scene you just wrote without pasting anything. G2 reviewers most often praise exactly this: the context awareness and how easy the tool is to pick up.

It handles long documents

Type’s pricing page says each document can hold up to 150,000 words. That covers most novels in one file. If you write epic fantasy, you will need to split the book across documents.

You can try it free

The free plan lets you try every feature with a limited pot of credits that never expire. That is a genuine advantage over tools that make you pay before you see anything.

What Type.ai Does Not Do Well

Type.ai’s biggest limitation is simple: it does not write your book. It helps you write it, one scene and one prompt at a time, and you still do the structural work of turning an idea into a finished manuscript.

You still have to drive

Type gives you a powerful assistant, but you decide what to ask it for, scene after scene. If you are a confident writer, that is the point. If you have never finished a book, it is the same blank page with a smarter helper beside it.

Type’s free AI novel writer tool shows this clearly. It generates character profiles, a 20-chapter outline and a preview of Chapter 1. The page itself calls that “a starting point.” Every chapter after that is yours to write in the editor.

The credit system is opaque

Type’s pricing page says AI features use credits and that “larger and more complex requests use more credits.” It does not say how many words a credit buys. So you cannot work out in advance whether Basic’s 500,000 credits will cover your novel.

Monthly credits also reset on your renewal date and do not roll over, even on an annual plan. When you run out, the AI stops working until next month, unless you buy extra credits.

No structured story bible

Notes are useful, but they are not a full worldbuilding database. Type’s own Novelcrafter comparison page admits Type “doesn’t have a dedicated worldbuilding database.” If you write sprawling series fiction, Novelcrafter does that job better.

Some limits worth knowing

  • Phrasing can go generic. G2 reviewers mention repetitive or bland output on harder topics, which is common to every tool built on general AI models.
  • English only. At least one G2 reviewer flags this.
  • Inconsistent word limits. The pricing page says 150,000 words per document. The AI novel writer page says 130,000. Check before you import a long manuscript.

How Type.ai Pricing Compares

As of November 1, 2026, Type’s pricing page lists four plans. Annual billing saves 33%.

PlanBilled monthlyBilled annuallyMonthly creditsType says it is for
Free$0$0Limited, one timeTrying every feature
Basic$12/mo$96/year ($8/mo)500,000Shorter content or stories
Pro$24/mo$192/year ($16/mo)1,500,000A novel or screenplay
Max$96/mo$768/year ($64/mo)6,000,000Several books a year

Your first paid subscription comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. It does not cover renewals or extra credit purchases. Writing, organizing, importing, exporting and sharing do not use credits, so your drafts stay usable if you stop paying.

Older reviews quote a single $29 “Premium” plan. That pricing is out of date.

The real cost of a book

Type labels Pro as the plan for a novel. Here is what that costs over the time a typical self-written novel takes:

  • 6 months of Pro, billed monthly: $144
  • 1 year of Pro, billed annually: $192
  • 2 years of Pro, billed annually: $384

Writer’s Digest notes that many authors spend months to years on a first draft. With Type, the bill keeps running for as long as you are writing.

By comparison, Chapter costs $97 one time with 2 books included and no subscription. Neither tool includes cover design, ISBNs or uploading to Amazon. Those costs are the same either way.

What Real Users Say About Type.ai

There is surprisingly little independent feedback on Type.ai, and that itself is useful to know before you pay.

G2

Type’s G2 listing carries only a small number of reviews. The praise centers on context awareness, ease of use and writing faster. The complaints center on price, repetitive phrasing on difficult topics and English-only support.

Trustpilot and Product Hunt

When we checked on November 1, 2026, Type had no reviews on Trustpilot and no reviews on its Product Hunt product page. One warning: Trustpilot lists a different company called “Typeai” at typeai.com. Its reviews are not about Type.ai, so do not let them sway you either way.

Type.ai reviews on Reddit

If you searched “type ai review reddit,” you probably noticed the same thing we did. Search engines surfaced no substantive Reddit threads reviewing Type.ai. Sudowrite and Novelcrafter get far more Reddit discussion.

That does not mean Type is bad. It means you are relying mostly on the free plan and the 30-day guarantee to judge it yourself, so use both. Be wary of “reviews” on Type’s own blog, which compare Type to rivals and naturally favor Type.

Where Type.ai Beats Chapter

Type.ai beats Chapter in six honest ways. If any of these describe you, Type may be the better buy.

  1. You want to write every sentence yourself. Type is a co-writing editor. Chapter writes the book for you. If the writing itself is the part you love, Type respects that and Chapter does not.
  2. You write screenplays or short stories. Type pitches Pro at novels and screenplays, and Basic at shorter stories. Chapter does not write screenplays, and its fiction software is built for manuscripts of 20,000 words and up.
  3. You want to try before paying. Type has a free plan. Chapter has no free tier or trial. Its 30-day money-back guarantee is the only way to try it without risk.
  4. You want a daily writing environment. Version history, offline mode, formatting and a share link make Type a place you live in. Chapter is a book-production workflow, not a word processor.
  5. You want model choice and open-ended chat. Type lets you brainstorm, ask for critique and rewrite freely with several leading models. Chapter runs a guided workflow and does not give you a free-form chat.
  6. Your monthly budget is small. At $8 a month billed annually, Type’s Basic plan costs less than Chapter to start. Past the first year, or on Pro, Chapter’s one-time $97 works out cheaper.

Who Should Buy Type.ai

  • Writers who already finish books and want AI as an editor, brainstorm partner and line-level helper.
  • Screenwriters and short story writers whom most book-focused AI tools ignore.
  • Writers moving off ChatGPT who are tired of pasting chapters into a chat window. Type keeps the draft and the AI together.
  • Anyone curious and budget-conscious who wants to test AI-assisted writing on a free plan first.

Who Should Not Buy Type.ai

  • People who want a finished book. Type helps you write. If your problem is that the book never gets written, a better editor will not fix it.
  • Nonfiction experts without writing time. Coaches and business owners who want an authority book usually need research, structure and a full draft, not a blank document.
  • Series writers who need a deep story bible. Novelcrafter’s codex is stronger here, and Type admits it.
  • Anyone who hates subscriptions or usage meters. Credits reset monthly, do not roll over, and Type does not say how many words they buy.
  • Non-English writers, based on what G2 reviewers report.

The Alternative We Built

Our Pick — Chapter

Chapter writes the complete book. You bring an idea, notes or a half-finished draft, and Chapter plans the structure, writes the full manuscript and edits it. Type gives you a better place to write; Chapter gets you to the finished book.

Best for: authors who want a complete, edited book rather than a writing assistant Pricing: $97 one time, 2 books included (fiction or nonfiction), 30-day money-back guarantee Why we built it: most people with a book in them never finish it, and a smarter editor does not change that

Chapter’s nonfiction software researches your topic, builds an outline you approve, writes the book in your voice and runs a DoubleCheck editing pass. It is built to deliver a written, edited book in under an hour. Read our first-party Chapter review for the full breakdown, including who it is not for.

Chapter’s fiction software writes full novels using story structures like Save the Cat, Three Act and the Romance Beat Sheet. It exports EPUB, PDF and DOCX, so you can polish the draft in Type, Word or Google Docs afterwards if you like.

More than 10,000 authors have used Chapter, and it has been featured in USA Today and the New York Times. Client results include $13,200 from a single book and $60,000 in 48 hours from one lead-magnet book.

Chapter is not the right pick if you want to write every word yourself or need a screenplay. For everyone else whose real goal is a finished book, it is the more direct route, and against Type’s Pro plan it costs less from the fifth month on.

Other tools worth comparing

Before you publish anything written with AI help, read Amazon KDP’s AI rules and Amazon’s own content guidelines. The US Copyright Office also has guidance on AI-generated work.

Type.ai helps you write the book; it does not finish it for you. If what you need is the finished manuscript, Chapter for nonfiction and Chapter for fiction write the complete book for $97 one time, with 2 books included, no subscription and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

FAQ

Is Type.ai worth it?

Type.ai is worth it if you want to write your own book with an AI assistant built into a real word processor. Its free plan lets you test it first. It is not worth it if you want a finished manuscript, because Type helps you write rather than writing the book for you.

How much does Type.ai cost?

Type.ai costs $0 on the free plan, then $12, $24 or $96 a month billed monthly for Basic, Pro and Max. Billed annually, those plans cost $96, $192 or $768 a year. Your first paid subscription includes a 30-day money-back guarantee, which excludes renewals and extra credits.

Is Type.ai free?

Type.ai has a free plan that lets you try every feature with a limited, one-time pot of credits that never expire but never reset. Once they run out, the AI features stop until you pay. Writing, importing, exporting and sharing stay free, so your drafts remain accessible.

Can Type.ai write a whole book?

Type.ai cannot write a whole book on its own. Its free AI novel writer produces character profiles, a 20-chapter outline and a Chapter 1 preview. After that, you write each chapter in the editor with AI help. Tools like Chapter write the complete manuscript for you.

What do Reddit users say about Type.ai?

Reddit has very little discussion of Type.ai. When we searched in November 2026, search engines surfaced no substantive Reddit review threads. Independent feedback mostly comes from a small number of G2 reviews, which praise its context awareness and criticize price and repetitive phrasing.
