One quirk worth knowing: the official store page does not print the desktop prices. They load from Literature & Latte’s payment processor, Paddle, at checkout. The $59.99, $95.98 and $50.99 figures above come from that checkout pricing for a US customer. The Mac App Store lists Scrivener 3 at the same $59.99.
Outside the US you pay in local currency with tax included. For a UK buyer in September 2026, the Mac licence came to £55 and the Mac + Windows bundle to £88, both including VAT. We did not verify other currencies.
Is Scrivener a One-Time Purchase or a Subscription?
Scrivener is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. You pay once per platform and keep that version forever, including every free point release. Scrivener 3.1, 3.2 and onward cost nothing extra if you own Scrivener 3.
The catch sits in Literature & Latte’s licensing terms: a licence does not cover major version updates. When a future Scrivener 4 ships, you would pay again, at a discount. You are never forced to upgrade, and Scrivener 3 keeps working.
As of September 2026, the store sells Scrivener 3 only. The current releases are 3.5.2 on macOS and 1.2.4 on iOS, per the official download page. No Scrivener 4 price has been published, so any figure you see for it is a guess.
What Does the Scrivener Licence Cover?
A Scrivener licence covers every computer you own on that one operating system, plus family members living with you. Literature & Latte calls this a household licence. It does not cover the other desktop platform or the iOS app.
In practice, that means:
- Unlimited Macs (or unlimited Windows PCs) in your household on one licence
- No per-book or per-project fees — write as many books as you like
- Free minor updates for the life of Scrivener 3
- Not included: the other desktop OS, the iOS app, or the next major version
Scrivener Education Discount, Upgrades and Crossgrades
The Scrivener education discount takes the desktop price from $59.99 to $50.99, a $9 saving (15%). It is only available to students and academics with an institutional affiliation, and it applies to both the Mac and Windows versions.
Upgrading From an Older Version
Upgrading to Scrivener 3 is free if you bought Scrivener 2 for Mac on or after 20 August 2017, or Scrivener 1 for Windows on or after 20 November 2017. Older licences get 45% off — about $33 on the current price, by our calculation.
According to the macOS upgrade page, the upgrade fee is the same for regular and education licences. You claim it inside the trial app by entering your old licence code.
Bought through the Mac App Store? Apple does not share customer data, so the discount is not automatic. Literature & Latte says you can email proof of purchase for a coupon instead.
Crossgrading Between Mac and Windows
If you already own one desktop version, the other costs $37.95 through Literature & Latte’s crossgrade offer. You unlock it from the trial window of the second app.
Buying Mac now and crossgrading later costs $97.94 in total. The bundle costs $95.98. The bundle saves you under $2, so there is no penalty for waiting until you actually need Windows. Mac App Store purchases are not eligible for crossgrades, and licences older than five years cannot be used.
Does Scrivener Have a Free Trial?
Scrivener has a 30-day free trial counted in days of use, not calendar days. Open it twice a week and the trial lasts about fifteen weeks. The trial is the full version with nothing locked, on both Mac and Windows.
There is no trial for iOS, because the App Store does not support one. That is a real gap: you pay $23.99 before you know whether the iPad app suits you. iOS sync also needs a Dropbox account, per the store listing.
It is one of the more generous trials in book writing software, long enough to draft several chapters, learn the Corkboard, and fight with Compile once before spending anything.
What Scrivener Really Costs You

- It is cheaper if you write every word yourself. At $59.99 with unlimited projects, Scrivener costs nothing more for book two, five or twenty. Chapter’s credits make sense only if you want AI to draft for you.
- Structural revision. The Binder and Corkboard let you split a 90,000-word manuscript into scenes and reorder them like index cards. Chapter does not offer revision surgery at that granularity.
- It works offline. Scrivener is a desktop app. Chapter runs in a browser and generates server-side, so no connection means no Chapter.
