Two things surprise most people. First, Plus has no annual discount — OpenAI states plainly that it does not support annual billing or prepayment for Plus. Second, Pro is now two plans, not one, split by usage allowance rather than by feature set.
One caveat worth knowing before you plan around the top tier: as of September 10, 2026, OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the Pro $200 plan. Existing subscriptions and the $100 Pro tier are unaffected.
What Do You Get on Each ChatGPT Plan?
ChatGPT Free gives you unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards, with separate and stricter caps on file uploads, image generation, voice, and data analysis. Ads may appear in some countries.
ChatGPT Go ($8/month) is the gap-filler plan, available worldwide since January 2026. It buys you more messages, more uploads, and more image creation on the fast flagship model. It remains ad-supported.
ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) is the one most individual writers end up on. OpenAI’s Plus page lists priority access at peak times, higher message and upload limits, advanced reasoning modes, larger file handling, and access to its coding agent.
ChatGPT Pro ($100 or $200/month) is a usage tier, not a different product. The Pro tiers help article frames the difference as roughly 5x Plus usage at $100 and 20x at $200, with the highest tier carrying maximum memory and context plus early feature previews.
How Much Is ChatGPT for Business?
ChatGPT Business is seat-based with a two-seat minimum, so the real entry price is around $40/month, not $20. OpenAI’s business pricing lists Standard seats at $25/user/month monthly or $20/user/month annually — a cut from the previous $25/$30 structure.
In August 2026 OpenAI added a second seat type. Premium seats cost $125/user/month monthly or $100/user/month annually, aimed at people whose usage would otherwise hit Business limits daily.
A Business subscription caps at 200 paid seats combined across both types. Registered nonprofits get a 20% discount through OpenAI for Nonprofits, bringing Standard seats to $20 monthly or $24 on the monthly plan.
Enterprise has no list price. It is quoted by sales, billed annually, and invoiced rather than charged to a card.
Is ChatGPT API Pricing the Same as a Subscription?
No — ChatGPT API pricing is entirely separate from your subscription and is billed per token, not per month. Paying for Plus gives you nothing in the API, and API credits give you nothing in the ChatGPT app. They are two different products on two different bills.

Here is where a pricing page stops being useful and arithmetic starts. A 60,000-word manuscript is roughly 80,000 tokens of output. That is cheap in raw API terms — a few dollars on a mid-tier model.
The cost is not the tokens. It is the months.
ChatGPT holds a conversation well, but a book is not a conversation. Context degrades over a long project, so you end up re-feeding your outline, your character sheets, and your established facts into every new session. That re-feeding is the actual work, and it is what turns a $20/month subscription into a nine-month subscription.
At $20/month, a book that takes you nine months costs $180 in subscription — plus nine months of your evenings. That is the honest number to compare against anything else.
