Plottr pricing starts at $60 a year or $150 lifetime for the base desktop plan. Plottr Pro costs $9.99 a month, $99 a year or $599 lifetime, and Pro + Community costs $14.99 a month, $129 a year or $649 lifetime. Every plan comes with a 30-day free trial.

Every figure below comes from Plottr’s official pricing page, checked on 7 October 2026. The page shows dollar amounts without naming a currency, so confirm the price at checkout before you pay.

In this breakdown, you’ll get:

  • Every Plottr plan with monthly, annual and lifetime prices side by side
  • What Pro actually adds over the base plan, and who needs it
  • The refund and renewal rules most buyers miss
  • An honest look at where Plottr beats Chapter, and where it doesn’t

Here are the plans.

How Much Does Plottr Cost?

Plottr costs $60 a year or $150 one time on the base plan. Pro costs $9.99 a month, $99 a year or $599 one time. Pro + Community costs $14.99 a month, $129 a year or $649 one time. The base plan has no monthly option at all.

PlanMonthlyAnnualLifetime
PlottrNo monthly plan$60/year$150
Plottr Pro$9.99/month$99/year$599
Plottr Pro + Community$14.99/month$129/year$649

The base annual plan works out to $5 a month. Pro annual saves about 17% over paying $9.99 for twelve months ($119.88). Pro + Community annual saves about 28% against $179.88 on monthly billing.

What Does the Base Plottr Plan Include?

The base Plottr plan is the desktop app for Windows and Mac, with your files and backups stored on your own device. It includes every core outlining feature: the visual timeline, plotlines, scene cards, character and place notes, and the template library.

Per the pricing page, the base plan includes:

  • Desktop app for Windows and Mac
  • Files and automatic backups kept on your device
  • Unlimited household devices (every plan has this)
  • Manual sync between devices
  • Upcoming features
  • No AI, a point Plottr advertises with a celebration emoji

The household licence is generous. You can install Plottr on every computer you own without buying extra seats.

For most solo novelists, this is the plan to buy. Our Plottr review covers the timeline and its roughly 30 story-structure templates in detail, including Save the Cat and the Hero’s Journey.

What Does Plottr Pro Add?

Plottr Pro adds the cloud. You get a browser app alongside the desktop app, files stored in the cloud, cloud plus on-device backups, real-time sync between devices, real-time collaboration, and sync with Plottr’s Idea Threads app.

That matters in three situations:

  • You write on a machine you can’t install software on, like a work laptop or a Chromebook
  • You co-write, and you and a partner need to edit the same outline at the same time
  • You switch devices daily and manual file sync keeps tripping you up

If none of those apply, Pro is hard to justify. The outlining features are the same on both plans. You’re paying for access and syncing, not a better outliner.

What Is Plottr Pro + Community?

Plottr Pro + Community is everything in Pro, plus a private Discord community and access to Plottr’s Education Vault. It costs $5 more a month than Pro, or $30 more a year.

The pricing page doesn’t list what the Education Vault contains in detail, so I can’t verify its course count or format. If the training is the main draw, ask Plottr support what’s inside before you upgrade.

Is the Plottr Lifetime Plan Worth It?

The base Plottr lifetime plan at $150 is worth it if you’ll outline for more than two and a half years. That’s the breakeven against $60 a year. Pro lifetime at $599 takes about six years to beat $99 a year, which is a much harder bet.

PlanLifetime priceAnnual priceBreakeven
Plottr$150$60~2.5 years
Plottr Pro$599$99~6 years
Pro + Community$649$129~5 years

My take: base lifetime is one of the better deals in writing software. Pro lifetime only makes sense if you’re certain you’ll need cloud collaboration for most of a decade.

Does Plottr Have a Free Trial or Refunds?

Plottr offers a 30-day free trial, and its FAQ says you can “try out Plottr for free for 30 long days.” The pricing page doesn’t say whether a credit card is required, so check that when you sign up. After purchase, Plottr doesn’t give refunds.

Instead of refunds, Plottr offers a Get Your Book Outlined Guarantee. If you work through its templates and tutorials and still can’t outline your book within a week, it offers up to 5 hours of personal coaching.

Two more rules worth knowing before you pay:

  • All subscriptions auto-renew. You cancel by contacting Plottr support.
  • No prorated refunds for unused subscription time.

The practical lesson: use the full 30 days. Outline a real book during the trial, then decide.

Does Plottr Run Discounts?

Plottr runs seasonal sales. It has published sale pages such as a Memorial Day sale, and it sells gift purchases. I couldn’t verify current sale percentages, so treat any discount figure you see quoted elsewhere as unconfirmed until it shows at checkout.

If you aren’t in a hurry, waiting for a holiday sale on the lifetime licence is a reasonable move.

What Does a Full Plottr Workflow Really Cost?

A full Plottr workflow costs more than Plottr. Plottr has no writing area, so you export your outline to Microsoft Word or Scrivener and draft there. Plottr’s export documentation confirms both export options.

The common pairing is Plottr plus Scrivener at $59.99 for Mac or Windows:

WorkflowYear 1Three-year total
Plottr lifetime + Scrivener$209.99$209.99
Plottr annual + Scrivener$119.99$239.99
Plottr Pro annual + Scrivener$158.99$356.99
Chapter$97$97

Scrivener’s price is from Literature & Latte’s store as of September 2026. If you already own Word or Scrivener, your real Plottr cost is just the Plottr line.

Where Plottr Beats Chapter

Plottr beats Chapter in several real ways, and you should know them before you choose.

  • Visual plotting. Plottr’s drag-and-drop timeline shows every plotline at once. For a braided, multi-POV story, that view is genuinely better than anything Chapter offers.
  • Series planning. Plottr is built to track characters and threads across multiple books. If you’re plotting book four, its story bible is a strong tool.
  • It teaches structure. Placing every beat yourself in a template teaches you more about structure than reading a generated outline.
  • No AI, by policy. If AI-generated prose is unacceptable to you or your publisher, Plottr’s “No AI” stance is a clear, documented answer. Chapter is an AI tool.
  • A lower entry price for pure outlining. At $60 a year, Plottr costs less than Chapter in year one if all you want is a plan.
  • A longer risk-free window. Plottr gives you 30 days to try before paying. Chapter has no free plan or free trial, though it does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee after purchase.

If you love drafting and your problem is structure, buy Plottr. We mean that.

Where Chapter Wins

Most people comparing outlining tools aren’t short of a plan. They’re short of a finished draft. That’s the gap Chapter was built for.

Our Pick — Chapter

Chapter takes your idea, builds the structure, shows you the outline to approve, and then writes the complete manuscript. It checks continuity across the book and exports files ready for KDP. You then revise and make it yours.

Best for: Writers who want a finished, structured manuscript rather than another outline Pricing: $97 one time, 2 books included (fiction or nonfiction), 30-day money-back guarantee Why we built it: Outlining tools assume the plan is the hard part. For most unfinished books, the hard part is the 80,000 words.

Chapter has helped 2,147+ authors create 5,000+ books, and it has been featured in USA Today and the New York Times. There’s no subscription, and you keep 100% of the rights. See how Chapter’s pricing works for the full details.

You can also combine them. Outline in Plottr, then give Chapter your characters and plot. Our Chapter vs Plottr comparison walks through that workflow.

Which Plottr Plan Should You Buy?

Buy base Plottr lifetime ($150) if you’re a committed outliner on one or two computers. Buy Pro annual ($99) only if you co-write or need the browser app. Skip Pro lifetime unless you’re sure about cloud collaboration for six-plus years.

FAQ

How much is Plottr per month?

Plottr per month costs $9.99 for Plottr Pro and $14.99 for Pro + Community. The base Plottr plan has no monthly option; it’s $60 a year, which works out to $5 a month, or $150 for a lifetime licence. Prices are from Plottr’s pricing page as of October 2026.

Is Plottr a one-time purchase?

Plottr can be a one-time purchase. Every tier has a lifetime option: $150 for base Plottr, $599 for Pro and $649 for Pro + Community. You can also pay yearly or, on Pro tiers, monthly. Subscriptions auto-renew until you cancel through support.

Does Plottr have a free version?

Plottr has no permanent free version, but it offers a 30-day free trial. After the trial, you choose an annual, monthly or lifetime plan. Plottr doesn’t refund purchases, so use the full trial to outline a real book before you commit.

Does Plottr use AI?

Plottr doesn’t use AI. Its pricing page lists “No AI” as a feature on its plans, alongside rows covering AI training and data use. That makes Plottr a fit for authors who need an AI-free toolchain, but it also means Plottr won’t draft any of your book.

Is Plottr Pro worth it?

Plottr Pro is worth it if you need real-time collaboration, a browser app, or cloud sync across devices. The outlining features match the base plan. Solo writers on one or two computers usually get the same value from the $150 base lifetime licence.
