Annual billing now exists on every paid tier, which is new — these were monthly-only for most of 2025 and 2026.

The difference between Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro is usage headroom and feature access, not model quality. Plus gives you 2x the free allotment and 400 GB of storage. Pro gives you 4x, 5 TB, Gemini Spark, expanded Deep Research, and $10 per month in Google Cloud credits.
For a writer, the deciding factor is Deep Research and long-context Pro access. If you are researching a nonfiction book and you keep hitting the wall on Plus, the $15 gap to Pro buys you the thing you actually ran out of.
Is There a Free Version of Gemini?
Gemini has a permanently free tier, not a trial. You get the Gemini app on web, Android and iOS, plus Flash-tier models with daily request caps. Google removed Pro models from the free API tier on 1 April 2026 — only Flash and Flash-Lite retain free access now.

Three things make a real difference to an API bill. Batch processing is 50 percent off across every model. Context caching cuts repeated input costs by up to 90 percent, with cache reads billed at 10 percent of base input price. And cache storage itself is charged hourly, between $1 and $4.50 per million tokens per hour depending on the model.
The trap nobody budgets for is thinking tokens. Gemini’s reasoning models generate internal tokens you never see but do pay for, billed at the output rate. On a Pro model at $12 per million output, a reasoning-heavy prompt can cost several times what the visible answer suggests.
