Dabble pricing has three monthly plans: Writer at $19 a month, Author at $29 a month and Bestseller at $49 a month. There’s also a $699 one-time Lifetime Author option, a 20% discount for annual billing, and a 14-day free trial with no credit card.

Every figure below comes from Dabble’s official pricing page, checked on 6 October 2026. Prices change, so confirm there before you buy.

In this breakdown, you’ll get:

  • Every Dabble plan, what it includes, and what it leaves out
  • When the $699 lifetime deal actually pays for itself
  • The real cost of one novel, two novels, and three years of writing
  • An honest section on where Dabble beats Chapter, and where it doesn’t

Here are the plans.

How Much Does Dabble Cost per Month?

Dabble costs $19, $29 or $49 per month, depending on the plan. All three include unlimited manuscripts, cloud sync and access on any device. The higher tiers add editing tools and, at the top, a writing course library.

PlanMonthly priceBuilt forKey additions
Writer$19Planning and draftingPlot Grid, story notebook, character profiles, goals, co-authoring, versioning
Author$29Editing and revisionComments, track changes, sticky notes, advanced grammar and style checks, Read-to-Me, beta-reader and editor support
Bestseller$49Learning the craftEverything in Author, plus DabbleU Academy: live monthly workshops, courses, 70+ hours of recordings
Lifetime Author$699 onceLong-term Dabble usersAll Author features, forever, including future Author features

Writer gets email support. Author and Bestseller add priority support by chat and email.

What Do You Get on the Dabble Writer Plan?

The Writer plan costs $19 a month and covers everything you need to plan and draft a novel by hand. It’s the cheapest way into Dabble, and for many writers it’s enough.

You get:

  • Unlimited manuscripts with cloud backup and sync
  • The Plot Grid, story notebook and character profiles
  • Goals and stats, focus mode, themes and dark mode
  • Spell check, versioning and manuscript organization
  • Co-authoring and writing group sharing

What it leaves out matters. Comments, track changes and the advanced grammar checks all sit on Author. If you plan to revise inside Dabble, or swap notes with an editor, budget for the upgrade.

Is Dabble Author or Bestseller Worth It?

Dabble Author is worth it if you revise and collaborate inside the app. At $29 a month, it adds the editing layer: comments, track changes, sticky notes, highlighting, Read-to-Me and beta-reader support.

Bestseller, at $49 a month, adds no new software features beyond Author. The extra $20 buys access to DabbleU Academy, which Dabble describes as live monthly workshops, a course library, 70+ hours of workshop recordings and community events.

So the honest test is simple. If you’d pay roughly $20 a month for a writing course anyway, Bestseller bundles one in. If not, Author gives you the full toolset.

How Much Is Dabble per Year?

Dabble’s pricing page says you save 20% when you pay annually, but it doesn’t print the annual dollar totals. Applying that stated 20% to the monthly prices gives these figures. Treat them as our calculation and confirm the exact amount at checkout.

Plan12 months, billed monthlyAnnual at 20% off (calculated)Effective monthly
Writer$228~$182.40~$15.20
Author$348~$278.40~$23.20
Bestseller$588~$470.40~$39.20

Students and teachers can get 30% off with an academic email, applied through Dabble’s partner Student App Centre. Dabble’s page notes that no additional discounts apply to the lifetime plan.

Is the Dabble Lifetime Deal Worth It?

The Dabble lifetime deal costs $699 once and gives you every Author feature permanently, plus future Author updates. Dabble frames it as paying for about two years of Author up front.

That framing holds against monthly billing: 24 months of Author costs $696. Against annual billing, the break-even stretches to about two and a half years (~$278.40 a year).

Two caveats. Lifetime covers Author, not Bestseller, so DabbleU Academy isn’t included. And it only pays off if you keep writing in Dabble for years, which is a bet on both your habits and the company.

Does Dabble Have a Free Plan or Free Trial?

Dabble has a 14-day free trial, no credit card required, but no permanent free plan. After the trial, you choose a paid plan or stop writing in the app.

Cancelling doesn’t trap your work. Dabble’s FAQ says you keep access to your manuscripts forever after a subscription ends, in read-only mode: you can view and export, but you can’t write new words.

On refunds, Dabble’s FAQ says that if you don’t find the subscription worth it, it will refund you. The pricing page doesn’t state a fixed refund window, so ask support before you rely on one.

What Does It Really Cost to Write a Novel in Dabble?

The sticker price is modest. The real cost depends on how long your book takes, because a subscription bills for time, not finished chapters.

ScenarioDabble costChapter cost
Try it before paying$0 (14-day trial)$97, 30-day money-back guarantee
One novel in 6 months (Writer monthly)$114$97 (includes a second book)
One novel in 12 months (Author monthly)$348$97 (includes a second book)
Two novels over 2 years (Author annual, calculated)~$557$97
Three years on Author annual (calculated)~$835$97
Lifetime Author$699$97

You’ll also need a formatting tool. Dabble’s export documentation lists Word, Google Docs, web and Markdown exports, and states that it doesn’t export PDF or EPUB directly. For a store-ready ebook, add something like Atticus (see our Atticus pricing breakdown).

As our guide to how long it takes to write a book shows, first novels often take a year or more. A stalled draft keeps billing either way.

Where Dabble Beats Chapter

We build Chapter, so weigh this with that in mind. Here’s where Dabble genuinely wins.

1. You can try it free. You can’t try Chapter free. Dabble gives you 14 days with no card. Chapter has no free tier and no free trial; our safety net is a 30-day money-back guarantee after you pay.

2. You write every word yourself. Dabble has no AI drafting. If you want your prose to be entirely your own, Dabble is built for exactly that. Chapter is an AI book writer, so it’s a different tool for a different goal.

3. The Plot Grid is the best visual plotting tool we’ve used. Mapping subplots and POV threads across chapters is faster in Dabble than anywhere else. Kindlepreneur’s Dabble review singles it out too.

4. Revision and collaboration are deeper. Track changes, comments, beta-reader sharing and co-authoring make Dabble a better workspace for revising with an editor or critique group.

5. Unlimited manuscripts suit prolific writers. If you draft five novels a year by hand, one Dabble subscription covers all of them. Chapter’s $97 includes two books, with extra books sold separately.

6. The Bestseller tier teaches the craft. Chapter doesn’t include writing courses. DabbleU’s workshops and recordings are a real benefit if you want to improve as a writer.

Why Chapter Is Still Our Pick for Most Authors

Our Pick — Chapter

Chapter writes your complete book, fiction or nonfiction, from a structure planned before any prose is generated. You pay $97 once, and that covers two books. There’s no subscription, you keep 100% of the rights, and there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Best for: authors whose book is stuck at the draft stage and who want a finished manuscript, not another monthly workspace Pricing: $97 one time, 2 books included (fiction or nonfiction), 30-day money-back guarantee Why we built it: most unfinished books aren’t missing a plotting tool; they’re missing the draft.

Here’s why it earns the top spot for most readers of this post:

  • No clock. Your price doesn’t rise if your book takes two years. Two years of Dabble Author costs several times more.
  • It produces the draft. Dabble organizes the words you write. Chapter generates a structured, full-length manuscript you then edit.
  • Cheaper than the lifetime deal by $602. If cost is the deciding factor, $97 for two books beats $699.
  • Proof at scale. More than 2,147 authors have used Chapter to create over 5,000 books, and it’s been featured in USA Today and the New York Times.

Our Chapter review covers what it does and doesn’t do well, and Chapter’s pricing explained breaks down the $97. For a feature-by-feature view, read Chapter vs Dabble.

You can see the plans for nonfiction and fiction on chapter.pub.

Is Dabble Cheaper Than Scrivener?

Over the long run, usually not. Scrivener is a one-time purchase, with a 30-day free trial listed on the Literature & Latte store. Dabble is a subscription, so its cost keeps growing for as long as you write in it. The store didn’t display the desktop license price when we checked, so confirm it there before you compare.

Dabble’s advantage is cloud sync and a gentler learning curve. See our Scrivener pricing guide and the full Scrivener vs Dabble comparison for the trade-offs.

If you use any AI tool alongside your draft, two outside rules apply. Amazon’s KDP content guidelines require you to disclose AI-generated content, and the US Copyright Office’s AI guidance says purely AI-generated material isn’t copyrightable.
